The Duke of Lancaster, who had risen in rebellion to gain independence from the Empire, was defeated by the Emperor's loyal knight, Laszlo Chrysus. Tragically, the one captured was the young and beautiful Duchess of Lancaster, Ethel Lancaster. Paraded before the nobles as a "spoil of war," Ethel was given by the Emperor to Laszlo Chrysus, who happened to be in need of a maid. Ethel, now considered Laszlo’s "possession," resolves to take her own life rather than suffer any humiliation. Yet Laszlo surprises her, insisting she simply do her work, saying he hired her as an actual maid. However, in Ethel’s eyes, Lord Chrysus—held to her own standards as a "perfect duchess"—appeared far too shabby... And so, Ethel, drawing on her experience as a duchess, gradually begins to transform Lord Chrysus's household.
